Reading fairy tales can awaken a child's creative senses as they imagine the characters popping out of the books. With these Altered Books sculptures by Susan Hoerth, akaRaidersofthelostart, it becomes a reality. The Texas-based artist collects vintage, discarded books and redesigns them into wonderfully imaginative sculptures reflecting the stories they hold within their text. Hoerth transforms classic books from Alice In Wonderland and The Wizard of Oz to A Christmas Carol and Grimm's Fairy Tales.
The artist says, "Collecting bits and pieces from my travels around the world and assembling them into a fine art collection of Curios is my passion. I have an eye for collecting vintage items to retell stories of the past, bring new life and preserving memories. Each piece that I design includes a mixture of the discarded and forgotten ordinary moments in everyday life."
These creatively repurposed and preserved book sculptures can be purchased at Hoerth's Etsy shop called The Abandoned Attic. Each piece is one of a kind, so they're priced accordingly at upwards of $125.
